Abstract
Beta (ß) carotene, lycopene, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b has been determined in the leaves of 20 accessions of Sesbania bispinosa, S. cannabina and S. sesban. Fresh third leaf from top of the plant at vegetative stage was fluked. Acetone-Hexane (4:6) solvent was used to determine the compounds. The leaves of S. sesban produced the highest chlorophyll-a (2.190±0.142 mg/100g) while the lowest in S. cannabina (1.692±0.500 mg/100g). Chlorophyll-b was also the highest in S. sesban (0.832±0.109 mg/100g) and the lowest in S. bispinosa (0.632±0.197 mg/100g). The highest ratio of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b (2.943 mg/100g ± 0.396) was observed in S. bispinosa leaves. The highest lycopene value of 1.034 µg/100g ±0.064 was found in S. cannabina and that of ß carotene (0.351 mg/100g ± 0.108) in S. bispinosa leaves. The highest ratio of lycopene and ß carotene was observed in S. sesban followed by S. bispinosa and S. cannabina.

Keywords: Sesbania species, ß carotene, lycopene, Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b
