 Abstract
The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during November 2015 to May 2016 to find out the varietal effect on growth, yield and yield contributing parameters of white maize. The experiment comprised two white maize varieties; Suvra and KS-510. Results showed that the plant height progressively increased from 30 to 120 days after sowing (DAS) which at latest age had the highest value of 221 cm as was recorded from SUVRA while the KS-510 had 199 cm. The SPAD value decreased from 100 to 120 DAS, the higher value was observed with and the highest SPAD meter reading at 120 DAS (40.05) was also observed with KS-510. At 120 DAS, significantly higher values in the component’s dry matter of a single plant were obtained with KS-510; such as in leaf (40.26 g), stem (53.79 g), tassel along with sterile cob (5.51 g), Fertile cob sheath (23.8 g), Fertile cob rachis (25.06 g), root (14.95 g) and seed (218.80 g). The shoot weight and total dry weight of the variety KS-510 was also significantly higher (364.73 and 381.24 g, respectively). In the KS-510 significantly higher values in number of cobs/plant (1.42), seeds/cob (510), seeds/row (34.96) compared to those of Suvra. Likewise, the variety KS-510 had significantly higher cob weight/plant (384 g), seed weight/plant (218 g) and seed weight/ha (12.963 t/ha). The corresponding values in Suvra were 329 g, 188 g and 11.105 t/ha.
