9-2-4 RESPONSE OF LOCAL AND MODERN T. AMAN RICE VARIETIES TO DROUGHT STRESS: I. VEGETATIVE GROWTH

Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during June through December 2014 to study the performance of local and modern transplanted rainy season rice varieties under drought stress condition. The experiment comprised 16 varieties; four modern (BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan62 and BU dhan1) and twelve local varieties (Kartik Shail, Doodh Kalam, Nakhuchi Mota, Kartik Balam, Lal Mota, Kalo Khaia, Changshai, Basmati Shakkar Khanna, Dholi Chikon, Ghashful Chikon, Moulata). Two experiments were set; one in pot (stressed condition) in completely randomized design, while another in a field following a randomized completely block design under non-stressed condition. Stress condition was imposed providing water in the pot when soil of the pots dried and plants showed wilting symptoms. Each treatment was replicated three times. In stressed condition, significantly longest plants (139.50 cm) were found in Kartik Balam and Basmati Shakkar Khanna while highest number of tillers hill-1 (20.33). In non-stressed condition, Rani Salute showed the highest number of leaves hill−1 at 45 DAT (10.67 and 71.67, respectively). On the other hand, in stressed condition, at 45 DAT, Moulata produced maximum leaves hill−1(70.00), which was statistically similar with DholiChikon, KaloKhaia and Changshai (69.33, 66.67 and 66.33, respectively). Highest straw dry weight (20.98 t ha-1) was found in Moulata. In non-stressed condition, the longest plants (184.83 cm) were found in Kalo Khaia and highest number of total tillers hill-1 (17.67) in BU Dhan 1. On and average, the local varieties under stressed and nonstressed condition had straw dry matter per hill of 66.01 and 82.37 g, respectively. The corresponding values for the improved varieties were 32.96 and 46.93 g, respectively. The modern ones showed more reductions (29.76%) than the local varieties (19.86%) due to the stress condition.

PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT EXOTIC INBRED RICE GENOTYPES DURING TRANSPLANTED AMAN SEASON

Abstract

Five exotic rice genotypes including one check BRRI dhan39 were evaluated for the performance of growth and yield parameter during transplanted Aman season 2012 in BARDC, Gazipur, Bangladesh. The exotic genotypes were CNI9012, GSR IRRI I 2, OM576, Thai03 and Thai011. Experiment results showed the significant differences on growth and yield contributing parameters among the varieties. The yield of OM576 (5.81 t ha-1) was higher than the popular check BRRI dhan39 and the lowest grain yield was found in Thai03. The highest yield was observed due to higher panicle number m-2 (443.3) and higher spikelet filling percentage. The growth duration of OM576 (101 days) was 17 days shorter than BRRI dhan39 (118 days). The result suggests that the genotype could be recommended to release as new variety in Bangladesh for increasing rice yield in Aman season.

EFFECT OF MUNGBEAN AND COWPEA BIOMASS INCORPORATION ON TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at farmers’ fields of Patuakhali sadar, Borguna sadar, and Barisal sadar, to reduce fertilizer requirement in succeeding T. aman rice and to improve soil health through incorporation of mungbean/cowpea biomass to soil in Mungbean/Cowpea-Fallow-T.aman cropping pattern during 2012-13 and 2013-14. Three treatments were, T1=No biomass incorporation+Recommended fertilizer (RF) for T.aman, T2=Mungbean biomass incorporation + 50% of RF for T.aman, T3=Cowpea biomass incorporation+50% of RF for T.aman. Results revealed that comparatively higher yield of T. aman was observed in the treatments T2 and T3 as compared to T1. During the growing period high temperature encouraged vegetative growth of mungbean and cowpea. As a result, pod formation was high. The incorporation of mungbean/cowpea biomass along with chemical fertilizers produced identical grain yields of T.aman rice with 50% of recommended fertilizers. The incorporation treatments had positive effect on succeeding T.aman rice. Considering the whole cropping system the productivity was higher. The findings of the research indicate that incorporation of biomass + 50% of recommended fertilizers application could increase yields substantially as compared to no biomass incorporation with 100% of recommended fertilizers in T.aman rice. Besides, the biomass incorporation helped maintain soil fertility, preventing further soil degradation.

PHYSIOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES OF TRANSPLANT AMAN RICE AS AFFECTED BY GREEN MANURING AND NITROGEN LEVELS

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh to assess the response of physiological attributes of transplant aman rice under different green manuring and nitrogen levels. The treatments consisted of three levels of Mimosa invisa biomass; M0= 0 t ha-1(control),M1= 5 t ha-1 and M2=10 t ha-1 and four levels of nitrogen N0= 0% N ha-1(control), N1= 25% N ha-1 (20.7 kg N ha-1), N2= 75% N ha-1(62.1 kg N ha-1) and N3 = 100% N ha-1of recommended dose (82.8 kg N ha-1). Incorporation of Mimosa invisa biomass at different rates in soil changed significantly the values of physiological attributes such as specific leaf area (SLA), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) values. The application of 10 t ha-1 of Mimosa invisa biomass gave highest specific leaf area i.e. 270.54 cm2 g-1 at 50 DAT but lowest SLA i.e. 174.025 cm2 g-1 at 75 DAT. CGR (18.68 gm-2day-1), RGR (0.085 gg-1 day-1) and NAR (0.011 mgdm-2day-1) values were greater with Mimosa invisa at 5 to 10 t ha-1at early growth stage when no Mimosa invisa had better RGR (0.028gg-1 day-1) and NAR (0.006 mgdm-2day-1) at the middle of growth stages. Application of 100% RD and 25% RD gave maximum SLA at 25 DAT when 75% RD showed highest (262.68 cm2g-1) at 50 DAT but no difference was marked at 75 DAT. 75% RD produced early maximum CGR (20.23 gm-2day-1), RGR (0.087gg-1day-1) and NAR (0.010 mgdm-2day-1) when no nitrogen gave lower CGR and RGR at early stage but produced greater NAR (0.006 mgdm-2day-1). Mimosa invisa either at 5 or 10 t ha-1 along with 25 to 75% RD producing maximum SLA, CGR, RGR and NAR at early growth stage for good support of growth, development and yield of aman rice.
