COMPARING MODERN VARIETIES OF WHITE MAIZE WITH LOCAL RACES: EAR CHARACTERS

Abstract
Two experiments were carried out, one initiating in Feb 05 with three modern white maize varieties (plough-01, plough-02 and Suvra) and the another with five local land races (red, black, yellow, purple and white) under two consecutive sowing dates (March 5 and 20) of 2015 at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural university in Bangladesh to evaluate and compare cob characters. Across the trials the cob length, cob circumference, length of the vacant ear tip, number of seed rows and seeds per cob respectively were in the range of 8.66-20.11, 8.93-19.11, 2.6-8.26 cm, 8.0-16.2 and 132-486. Plough 201 (20.11 cm) produced the longest while the later sown local ‘black’ produced the shortest cobs (8.66 cm).  Plough 201 had the highest number of seed per cob (486), while Suvra had the highest seed rows (14) and the least number of seeds per cob (346). Across and among the local landraces the early sown crops had higher values in all the parameters of cob. The thickest cobs (14.56 cm circumference) were found in the early sown local white while more number of seeds per cob was seen in the early sown local black (259). Across the trials, the dry weights in cobs, seed, shell and husk ranged in 12.77-68.96, 1.64-55.76, 4.34-8.65 and 3.2-6.86 g respectively. The highest weight of cob was obtained with Suvra (68.96 g) and that of the seed in both Plough-202 and Suvra (54.21 and 55.76 g respectively). However, Suvra had the maximum shell and husk dry weight (6.8 and 6.4 g respectively). The dry weight per cob of the local maize was in a range of 21.95 to 28.90 g. The early sown local black and local purple had identical showing significantly higher cob dry weights (38.6-39.51 g) than other local landraces.

Abstract

The research experiment was conducted to efficacy of some IPM package against Red pumpkin beetle and fruit fly on sweet gourd during (October-May) of 2015-2016. The experiment consisted of five IPM package (T1-Applying Cultural and Mechanical control method at 7 days interval, T2- Applying Mechanical control method at 7 days interval + using pheromone trap, T3-Applying Cultural control method and spraying Suntaf 50 SP @ 1.5 gm per liter of water at 7 days interval, T4-Applying Mechanical control method and spraying Sumialpha 5EC @ 1.0 ml per liter of water at 7 days interval, T5-Combination of Chemical (Sevin 85 SP @ 1.5 gm in 1 liter of water), Cultural and field sanitation at 7 days interval) along with one control (T6-Untreated). At the vegetative and reproductive stage of sweet gourd, T5 showed least infestation of beetle over others (64.12%). The greatest infestation was shown in T6.  At the reproductive stage, the highest number of fruit fly were recorded (13.67) from T6, whereas the lowest (1.33) and the least percent fruit infestation over control were recorded from T2. The highest weight of single fruit of sweet gourd (1050 g) were recorded in T5 and the lowest (898 g) was recorded in T6.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from March to June, 2016. The treatment consisted of two factors: Factor A: Three heat tolerant variety. viz; V1: KSP-1700, V2: KSP-176, and V3: KSP-30.  Factor B: Four levels of potassium fertilizer. viz;  F0: (control); F1: 80 kg K/ha; F2: 120 kg K/ha and F3: 160 kg K/ha. These three varieties performed better with proper management of potassium fertilizers on plant height, single bulb weight, fresh foliage weight, yield plot-1 and yield ha-1. The highest yield ha-1 (25.01 t) was recorded from V1K2 treatment combination.

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT WEED CONTROL METHODS ON THE YIELD OF TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE VARIETIES

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during August to December, 2013 in T. aman season with a view to find out the performance of two transplanted aman rice varieties BRRI dhan56 and BRRI dhan57 under different weed control methods; viz. chemical herbicide Rifit 50EC (Pretilachor 500 g L-1) @ 1 L/ha (W1), polythene paper (W2), stale seedbed (W3), one hand weeding at 20 DAT (W4), two hand weedings at 20 and 40 DAT respectively (W5) and no weeding (control) (W6) using split plot design. Eighteen different weed species infested the field among which Cyperus michelianus (36.73%), Cyperus esculentus (17.31%) at 30 DAT; Cyperus esculentus (25.13%) Alternanthera sessilis (21.53%) and Cyperus difformis (15.79%) at 60 DAT, Fimbristylis miliaceae (19.50%) at 90 DAT were dominant. Two hand weedings at 20 and 40 DAT (W5) proved the highest weed control efficiency showing 89.90% at 30 DAT, 59.74% at 60 DAT and 78.85% at 90 DAT. BRRI dhan56 produced higher (3.70 t ha-1) grain yield when two times weeding were performed at 20 and 40 DAT. This variety also produced the longest panicle length (23.39 cm), 1000-grain weight (23.12 g), grain yield (3.14 t ha1), straw yield (5.16 t ha-1), biological yield (8.90 t ha-1) and harvest index (35.08%) which were better than those of the BRRI dhan57. Economic analysis of the weed control parameters showed that the highest Benefit Cost Ratio, BCR  (1.92) was recorded from the chemical herbicide Rifit 500EC weed control. While the two hand weeding, stale seed bed and one hand weeding produced 1.79, 1.69 and 1.48 BCR respectively.

Abstract

Post-harvest problem is one of the major factors to cause a measurable quantitative and qualitative loss in potato cultivation. The study investigated the extent of post-harvest problems of potato farmers. Data were collected from 94 potato farmers of Kalai Upazila (Sub district) under Joypurhat district I Bangladesh during the period from November 05 to December 04, 2016. Descriptive statistics, and multiple regression were used for analysis. The majority of the potato farmers (72.3 %) experienced medium post-harvest problems. Education, distance to the market, distance to the cold storage facility and availability of market information were significant and explained to be 47.3 percent of the variations in post-harvest problems. Policy makers should address these factors as a major step in reducing post-harvest loss of potato in the district.

Abstract
Experiments on population emerged and damage assessment of three stored cereals, such as rice, wheat and maize by angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) were conducted in the Entomology laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh during the period from May to December, 2014. Adults emerged of angoumois grain moth for 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations varied significantly for different stored grains. The highest number of adults (81.75 - 406.75) emerged in wheat grains, while the lowest (9.50- 48.50) in rice. In maize, number of adults emerged 43.75 to 133.00 at 1st to 3rd generation. Maximum infestations were recorded in wheat grains and the lowest is rice for 43.50% to 8.70% in three generations of the insect. At the different generations the highest weight loss of grain was occurred in wheat and the lowest in rice. In wheat, weight loss ranged from 43.50 to 14.29% in 3rd to 1st generation. For rice it was 21.63 to 10.15%. For maize it was 35.25 to 13.51%. Percent of infestation of the stored cereals was always positively correlated with percent of weight loss.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during October 2015 to March 2016 to find out the productivity and profitability of tomato as influenced by micronutrients. This was a single factor experiment and consisted of 11 treatments which were the combination of different doses of micronutrients: T0: ( Zn0 B0 Cu0 kg ha-1), T1: (Zn0 B4 Cu2 kg ha-1), T2: (Zn4 B4 Cu2 kg ha-1), T3: (Zn6 B4 Cu2 kg ha-1), T4: (Zn8 B4 Cu2 kg ha-1), T5: (Zn8 B0 Cu2 kg ha-1), T6: (Zn6 B2 Cu0 kg ha-1), T7: (Zn6 B6 Cu2 kg ha-1), T8: (Zn6 B4 Cu0 kg ha-1), T9: (Zn6 B4 Cu1 kg ha-1 ) and T10: (Zn6 B4 Cu3 kg ha-1). Recommended doses of cowdung, Urea, TSP and MP were also used as basal dose. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Maximum yield hectare-1 (96.00 t/ha), were recorded from the T3 treatment while the minimum values of all observation were recorded from the T0 that is control treatment. Calculating economic point of view, the treatment T3 gave the highest economic return (Tk. 674944 ha-1) with 2.37 benefit cost ratio.

Abstract

The study was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during from November 2012 to March 2013. The experiment comprised of two factors- Factor A: Irrigation, I0: No irrigation i.e. control; I1: Irrigation at 20 DAS (crown root initiation stage); I2: Irrigation at 55 DAS (flowering stage) and I3: Irrigation at 20, 55 and 75 DAS (crown root initiation stage, flowering stage and grain filling stage) and Factor B: Level of potassium fertilizer, K0: 0 kg K2O ha-1, K1: 50 kg K2O ha-1 and K2: 100 kg K2O ha-1. The irrigation levels I1, I2 and I3 were at par and had significantly higher values in number of spikes per hill, number of spikelets per spike, spike length, 1000 seed weight, straw yield and grain yield as compared to the control. Likewise application of both the doses of potassium (K1 and K2) were at par and showed significantly higher values in number of spikes per hill, number of spikelets per spike, spike length, 1000 seed weight, straw yield and grain yield than the control. Both the factors had significant effect on spike length, number of filled grains per spike, grain yield and straw yield. The interaction treatment I3K1 and I3K2 were at par showing significantly the higher number of spike per hill, number of spikelets per spike, filled grains per spike and grain yield per hectare, straw yields although the longest spike (19.60 cm), highest filled grains spike-1 (34.83). grain yield (3.79 t ha-1), straw yield (6.09 t ha-1) and biological yield (9.88 ha-1) was observed from I3K2. On the other hand, the shortest spike (13.80 cm) was recorded from I0K0. Significantly the lowest number of filled grains spike-1 (23.33), grain yield (2.04 t ha-1), straw yield (3.77 t ha-1) and biological yield (5.81 ha-1) was recorded from I2K0.

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November 2012 to March 2013 in rabi season with a view to find out the optimum sowing date for maximum growth and yield of wheat varieties. The experiment was carried out with three wheat varieties i.e.  BARI Gom 21, BARI Gom 23 and BARI Gom 24; and five different sowing dates viz. 10th November; 20th November; 30th November; 10th December and 20th December of 2012 following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that among the wheat varieties BARI Gom 24 performed best recording the highest grain yield (4.51 t ha-1). On the other hand, November 20th performed better than the other sowing dates showing the highest grain yield (4.81 t ha-1). Gradual decrease of growth parameters, yield attributes and yield were observed when wheat seeds were planted in delay after November 20th. Based on the above findings it may be concluded that wheat seeds of BARI Gom 24 may be sown on 20th November for obtaining maximum grain yield.

Abstract
An experiment carried out to evaluate the performance of local maize variety compared to the modern variety. Treatment comprised three modern varieties i.e. Plough-201, Plough-202 and Suvra; and five local landraces i.e. Red, Purple, White, Yellow and Black. Local landraces were sown two times, 5 March 2015 (early) and 10 March 2015 (Late). Results revealed that the modern varieties produced tassel and silk 11. 33 and 20.50 days earlier, respectively along with 28.17 days earlier harvesting days compared to the local ones. The local landraces were bit longer plants (5.02 cm) than the modern varieties. The local landraces had three more leaves per plant (17) compared to that of the modern ones. The stem base of the modern varieties was 20% thicker (9.11 cm stem base circumference) compared to the local landraces. The modern varieties produced cobs at the 7th nodes whereas those of the local varieties almost at the top of the plants (12th nodes). Delayed sowing time of the local landraces resulted in the delayed tasseling and harvesting days by 11 and 23 days, respectively. The variety yellow grained had the longest tasseling days (69 days) whereas the white grained variety the shortest (62 days). The white grained variety had the longest silking days (87.50 days) while the red and black grained the shortest (78.50 days). The yellow grained variety sown in delay had the longest tasseling days (78 days) while red, black and purple sown early had the lowest tasseling days (58 days). The purple grained variety at both the sowing dates and; yellow and white at the late sowing dates produced silk in delay (87-88 days) while others in 71-81 days. The longest variety was the yellow grained showing 213 cm whereas the white grained variety was the shortest (170 cm). The variety white grained had 1.45 to almost three more leaves (17.40 per plant) than others. The thickest stem base circumference was obtained in the black grained one (8.40 cm) and the lowest in the red grained one (6.50 cm). The information derived from this study may be a good source of new allelic diversity that could at least be used for developing different important elite maize materials especially the ones to be produced for fodder purposes.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at the Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during January to May, 2007 to determine the callus induction ability of five genotypes of Brassica at different levels of salt stress set imposing varied concentrations (0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 NaCl) supplemented with 1 mg/1 2, 4-D and 10 mg/1 BAP and 3 mg/1 AgNO3. Shoot tips of five Brassica genotypes (G26, G16, G25, G17 and G24) were cultured in MS media having the varied salt concentrations. Results showed that the percent callus induction of different genotypes varied in different treatments in respect of susceptibility to NaCl. In general, callus weight and size decreased with the increase of salinity level. Among the genotypes and G26 showed more callus induction ability than the other genotypes.

Abstract

 The experiment was conducted to study the effect of the varying periods of steam pasteurization (2, 3, 4 and 5 hours plus pasteurization in autoclave) along with without pasturization. of substrate on the growth and yield characters of oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) mushroom at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Mushroom Culture House, during January, 2015 to April, 2015. The growth and yield contributing characters of mushroom were significantly influenced by time duration of pasteurization of substrate. Minimum mycelium running time (7.0 days) was required in autoclaved spawn packets. The highest growth rate (0.96 cm/day) was observed in 3 hours steam treated packets which was statistically similar to autoclaved packets, the lowest time (3 days)  required for primordia  formation, the minimum days (5 days) required for primordia formation to first harvesting, the highest number of primordia was observed in three (3) hours steam pasteurized packets of mushroom. The maximum duration was required (46 days) for total harvesting after stimulation in autoclave sterilized packets. Significantly the highest number of fruiting bodies (49.40) per packet was harvested from five hours steam pasteurized packets. The highest diameter (8.16 cm) of pelius was observed in steam from 3 hours packets and the lowest average length (1.82 cm) of stipe was recorded in autoclaved packets. On the other hand, maximum time (29.00 days) was required for completion of mycelium running, the lowest mycelium run rate (0.36 cm), the highest days required from stimulation to primordia initiation (10.00 days), the lowest number of primordia (23.60), the lowest  number of fruiting bodies (20.40) were observed in unpasteurized packets (control). Steam pasteurization for three hours as well as sterilization of substrate by autoclave gave the better performance among the treatments.

A SIMPLE METHOD FOR THE ISOLATION OF PROTOPLASTS FROM LEAVES OF NICOTIANA BENTHAMIANA

Abstract

Protoplasts are plant cells that lack their cell walls. Isolation of protoplasts from different plant tissues was first reported more than 40 years ago and since then used to study a variety of cellular processes. In this article, a simple protoplast isolation method was developed from the leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana grown in the open air.  The optimum condition for protoplast isolation was established by using 1% cellulose R-10 and 0.3% macerozyme R-10 dissolved in F-PIN solution. The method is simple and easy-to-handle and gives satisfactory yields typically. Two to three leaves of tobacco yielded 5-10x106 intact protoplasts in 2 hr.

Abstract

The experiment was carried out to study the mean performance, heritability and genetic gain of yield and its components and to find out new plant type genotypes of Brassica rapa. A total number of 23 (Twenty three) materials were used in this experiment where three were checks varieties, twenty were F3 and F4 segregating materials. The genotype BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-2 of F3 and F4 population and the widely cultivated check variety BARI Sarisha-15 required almost similar days to mature showing almost similar number of seeds per siliqua and thousands seed weight. The other yield contributing characters e.g. plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliqua per plant and siliqua length were recorded higher in BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-2 than the checks. The yield per plant was found higher in the genotype BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-2 than BARI Sarisha-15. The days to maturity, plant height and thousand seed weight were almost same in the genotype BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-3 and BARI Sarisha-15. The genotype BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-3 showed higher number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliqua per plant, siliqua length, number of seed per siliqua and yield per plant than popular variety BARI Sarisha-15. Thousand seed weight and yield per plant had high heritability along with high genetic advance in percent mean. The moderate heritability and high genetic advance in percent mean were recorded for number of secondary branches per plant and number of siliqua per plant indicating that the selection of these traits would be effective. The genotypes BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-3 and BARI Sarisha-15 × SAU Sarisha-2 were chosen as new plant type for their better performance in aspects of yield and yield contributing traits than the popular check varieties.

INFLUENCE OF SEED TREATMENTS ON QUALITY SEED PRODUCTION OF CHICKPEA

Abstract

The experiment was carried out at the research field and laboratory of Seed Technology Division during rabi season of 2013-14 to investigate the effect of different seed treatments on stand establishment, seed yield and quality of chickpea. Five seed treatments were: T1= GA3 50 ppm, T2= GA3 100 ppm, T3=GA3 200 ppm, T4= hydropriming and T5= Control. The maximum seedling emergence (78.00%) and plant population m-2 were obtained from GA3 50 ppm treatment which were at par with that of  hydropriming. Remarkable variation was observed in CGR among the treatments at 60-120 days after emergence and maximum CGR was obtained from GA3 100 ppm and hydropriming treatments. Among the seed treatments, significant differences were recorded in plant height, number of branches plant-1, pods plant-1, seeds pod-1, 100-seed weight and seed yield. Seeds treated with GA3 100 ppm gave the highest seed yield followed by GA3 50 ppm and hydropriming. After harvesting, significantly highest seed germination (95.33%), root length (17.40 cm), seedling dry weight (66.43 mg) and vigour index (6338) were recorded from GA3 50 ppm which was at par with that of GA3 100 ppm.

   YIELD AND QUALITY OF GARDEN PEA AS INFLUENCED BY SOWING DATES AND VARIETIES

Abstract

The experiment was carried out at the research field and laboratory of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Gazipur during rabi season of 2016-17 to find out the effect of sowing dates and varieties on yield and quality of garden pea seed. Garden Pea seeds of two varieties viz., BARI Motorshuti-1 and BARI Motorshuti-3 were sown at 10 days interval from 20 October to 30 November. Significantly higher seed yield (1.70 t/ha) was found in 20 November sowing date followed by 30 November sowing date. Among the varieties, BARI Motorshuti-1 produced significantly higher seed yield compared to BARI Motorshuti-3. Interaction effect was found significant and maximum seed yield of 1.90 t/ha was noted in 20 November sowing of BARI Motorshuti-1. BARI Motorshuti-3 sown at 20 November showed better seed quality in terms of germination and vigor index.

EFFECT OF NAPHTHALENE ACETIC ACID ON QUALITY SEED PRODUCTION OF MUNGBEAN

Abstract
Quality mungbean seed is as a major concern for increasing mungbean production vertically in Bangladesh. A field study was conducted at the research field of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2009-2010 and 2010-11 to know the effect of doses and number of spraying of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on seed yield and quality of mungbean. Seven treatments viz., i) control, ii) 15 ppm NAA spraying 1 time, iii)15 ppm NAA spraying 2 times, iv) 30 ppm NAA spraying 1 time, v) 30 ppm NAA spraying 2 times, vi) 45 ppm NAA spraying 1 time, and vii) 45 ppm NAA spraying 2 times were imposed. Naphthalene acetic acid showed significant influence on pods/plant and seed yield of mungbean. The highest seed yield (1411.73 kg) of mungbean was produced by using 30 ppm NAA spraying 1 time. But maximum seed germination (> 84%) was observed in 15 ppm NAA spraying 1 time whereas 30 ppm NAA spraying 1 time gave more than 81% seed germination. Gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio were also observed to be the highest from 30 ppm NAA spraying 1 time.
