10-1-2 EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DIFFERENT INSECTICIDES AT DIFFERENT TIME OF APPLICATION AGAINST RICE YELLOW STEM BORER (SCIRPOPHAGA INCERTULAS)

Abstract


Rice yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas) is considered as one of the major pest of rice. An experiment was carried out in the field laboratory, department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University to find out the effectiveness of different insecticides at different time of application against rice yellow stem borer during the period from January to June, 2014. The treatments included Impride 17.8 SL (Imidacloprid), Mascodan 5 G (Carbofuran), Aroma 50 SC (Fipronil), Morter 48 EC (Chlorpyrifos) at the rates per hectare of 125 ml, 3.24 kg, and 81.78 ml respectively and also Neem (Azadirachta indica) Extract at the rate of 15 ml per liter. The effectiveness were determined by counting dead heart and white head caused by the attack of rice yellow stem borer infestation on rice at vegetative, booting and panicle initiation stages. The reduction of dead heart and white head varied significantly with time interval due to differential dose of insecticides. Minimum number of dead heart symptoms were observed in Mascodan 5 G and minimum with Aroma 50 SC. Percent reduction over control of dead heart was also high with Mascodan 5 G at both vegetative and booting stages; and percent reduction over control of white head was high with Aroma 50 SC in panicle initiation stage. Again Mascodan 5 G showed highest yield compared to other selective insecticides. On the other hand, Neem extract was the least effective one among the applied insecticides showing lower yield although it was higher than control plot having no insecticides application.

9-2-4 RESPONSE OF LOCAL AND MODERN T. AMAN RICE VARIETIES TO DROUGHT STRESS: I. VEGETATIVE GROWTH

Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during June through December 2014 to study the performance of local and modern transplanted rainy season rice varieties under drought stress condition. The experiment comprised 16 varieties; four modern (BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan62 and BU dhan1) and twelve local varieties (Kartik Shail, Doodh Kalam, Nakhuchi Mota, Kartik Balam, Lal Mota, Kalo Khaia, Changshai, Basmati Shakkar Khanna, Dholi Chikon, Ghashful Chikon, Moulata). Two experiments were set; one in pot (stressed condition) in completely randomized design, while another in a field following a randomized completely block design under non-stressed condition. Stress condition was imposed providing water in the pot when soil of the pots dried and plants showed wilting symptoms. Each treatment was replicated three times. In stressed condition, significantly longest plants (139.50 cm) were found in Kartik Balam and Basmati Shakkar Khanna while highest number of tillers hill-1 (20.33). In non-stressed condition, Rani Salute showed the highest number of leaves hill−1 at 45 DAT (10.67 and 71.67, respectively). On the other hand, in stressed condition, at 45 DAT, Moulata produced maximum leaves hill−1(70.00), which was statistically similar with DholiChikon, KaloKhaia and Changshai (69.33, 66.67 and 66.33, respectively). Highest straw dry weight (20.98 t ha-1) was found in Moulata. In non-stressed condition, the longest plants (184.83 cm) were found in Kalo Khaia and highest number of total tillers hill-1 (17.67) in BU Dhan 1. On and average, the local varieties under stressed and nonstressed condition had straw dry matter per hill of 66.01 and 82.37 g, respectively. The corresponding values for the improved varieties were 32.96 and 46.93 g, respectively. The modern ones showed more reductions (29.76%) than the local varieties (19.86%) due to the stress condition.

9-2-6 PERFORMANCE OF NPKS AND ORGANIC MANURES ON THE GROWTH, YIELD AND NUTRIENT CONCENTRATION IN BRRI Dhan29

Abstract

The experiment was conducted in the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from December 2012 to May 2013 to know the effect of fertilizers and manures on the yield and nutrient concentration in BRRI dhan29. The experiment comprised eight levels of fertilizers plus manures, such as T0: Control, T1: N120P25K60S20Zn2 (Recommended dose), T2: 50% NPKSZn + 5 ton cowdung ha-1, T3: 70% NPKSZn + 3 ton cowdung ha-1, T4: 50% NPKSZn + 5 ton compost ha-1, T5: 70% NPKSZn + 3 ton compost ha-1, T6: 50% NPKSZn+ 3.5 ton poultry manure ha-1 and T7: 70% NPKSZn + 2.1 ton poultry manure ha-1 were used. At the harvest, the yield parameters and total yield were recorded. The yield contributing characters and yields were significantly affected by level of fertilizers and manures. The highest grain yield and straw yields were found from recommended dose of fertilizer though it was statistically similar to 70% NPKSZn+2.1 ton poultry manure/ha treatment and lowest in control treatment. The grain nutrient concentrations of BRRI dhan29 were significantly affected by the application of fertilizers and manures. The higher grain nutrient concentrations were found in the treatments where fertilizers were used in combination with poultry manure. The higher concentrations of grain K and S were found in the treatments where fertilizers were used in combination with poultry manure.

9-2-2 BREEDING DROUGHT TOLERANT RICE VARIETY FOR RAIN-FED AGRONOMIC SYSTEM IN BANGLADESH

Abstract

Drought stress can occur in any stage of growth and severely affect the yield of rice. Rain-fed rice cultivation system is hindered due to drought stress and this affects national economy of Bangladesh. Drought tolerance in vegetative stage is important for the later stages of development leading to productivity. In this study, we have analyzed some selected traits involved in drought tolerance mechanisms at the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Haji Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology of Bangladesh in 2011. We have used one African drought tolerant rice variety Nerica4, one drought susceptible rice variety BRRI dhan28 and one semi dwarf rice variety Parizat in our current research and evaluated selected traits including the progenies. Shoot and root characters were been considered as heritable traits. We found that Nerica4 had higher plant height (112 cm) followed by BRRI dhan28 (108 cm). Crossing of these two parents produced population with moderate plant height (118 cm and 81 cm) in F1 and F2, respectively. However, no relationship was observed among the plant height, tiller number and shoot dry weight. Plant height was found to be controlled by complete dominance. Interestingly, F1 and F2 populations of the cross of Parizat and Nerica4 showed the highest root length. BRRI dhan28 showed the highest root length (26.48 cm) among the parents. These results clearly indicate that, combination of additive and dominance effect was not sufficient and segregation and recombination might be affected by environmental factors. However, positive correlation was found between root thickness and root xylem vessel number. Considering the above characteristics, the population arisen from the Parizat and Nerica4 cross may be used to develop drought tolerant rice variety(ies).

EFFECT OF RICE STRAW AND WATER HYACINTH MULCH ON

TUBEROSE (Polianthes tuberose L) PRODUCTION

Abstract
The study was conducted at the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from May 2010 to February, 2011. The experiment consisted of three levels of mulch (M0, control; M1, Rice straw mulch and M2, water hyacinth mulch). Results showed that mulch application (both M1 and M2) had significant effect on different morphological parameters showing significantly higher values of all the parameters than control. M2 always showed higher values of plant height (67.80 cm), number of leaf (11.40), % flowering plant (91.40), length of flower stalk (66.30 cm), lenth of rachis (34.20 cm), number of spikelets (14.00), per hectare number of spikelets (346), weight of individual bulb (28.20 g), number of bulblet (23.20), weight of bulblet (13.40 g), and yield of bulblet and bulb (22.40 t) compared to M1. However the values with M2 were significantly higher than M1 for the parameters of % flowering plants (91.40), number of spikelets spike-1 (14.00), weight of bublet (13.40 g plant-1) and yield of bulb (25.60 t ha-1).

PHYSIOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES OF TRANSPLANT AMAN RICE AS AFFECTED BY GREEN MANURING AND NITROGEN LEVELS

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh to assess the response of physiological attributes of transplant aman rice under different green manuring and nitrogen levels. The treatments consisted of three levels of Mimosa invisa biomass; M0= 0 t ha-1(control),M1= 5 t ha-1 and M2=10 t ha-1 and four levels of nitrogen N0= 0% N ha-1(control), N1= 25% N ha-1 (20.7 kg N ha-1), N2= 75% N ha-1(62.1 kg N ha-1) and N3 = 100% N ha-1of recommended dose (82.8 kg N ha-1). Incorporation of Mimosa invisa biomass at different rates in soil changed significantly the values of physiological attributes such as specific leaf area (SLA), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) values. The application of 10 t ha-1 of Mimosa invisa biomass gave highest specific leaf area i.e. 270.54 cm2 g-1 at 50 DAT but lowest SLA i.e. 174.025 cm2 g-1 at 75 DAT. CGR (18.68 gm-2day-1), RGR (0.085 gg-1 day-1) and NAR (0.011 mgdm-2day-1) values were greater with Mimosa invisa at 5 to 10 t ha-1at early growth stage when no Mimosa invisa had better RGR (0.028gg-1 day-1) and NAR (0.006 mgdm-2day-1) at the middle of growth stages. Application of 100% RD and 25% RD gave maximum SLA at 25 DAT when 75% RD showed highest (262.68 cm2g-1) at 50 DAT but no difference was marked at 75 DAT. 75% RD produced early maximum CGR (20.23 gm-2day-1), RGR (0.087gg-1day-1) and NAR (0.010 mgdm-2day-1) when no nitrogen gave lower CGR and RGR at early stage but produced greater NAR (0.006 mgdm-2day-1). Mimosa invisa either at 5 or 10 t ha-1 along with 25 to 75% RD producing maximum SLA, CGR, RGR and NAR at early growth stage for good support of growth, development and yield of aman rice.

EFFECT OF ARSENIC CONCENTRATION ON THE ACCUMULATION OF MINERALS WITHIN ROOTS AND LEAVES OF RICE SEEDLINGS

Abstract

A hydroponic experiment was conducted in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur from March to April, 2012 to observe the effect of arsenic concentration on accumulation of minerals within rice seedlings. Seedlings were treated with 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 ppm of arsenic (As) along with full Hoagland solution for 14 days in net house condition. Our experiment result indicated that arsenic was mostly concentrated in roots and a little amount was moved to shoots, indicating that arsenic was not easily translocated to shoots of rice seedlings. Accumulation of P, K, Fe, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu decreased in leaves significantly with increasing the arsenic dose indicating that rice seedlings are As-sensitive and As-toxicity depends on the arsenic concentration in the rooting medium. In root, accumulation of P, K and Mn decreased but accumulation of Ca and Cu increased with increasing arsenic concentration. Mg accumulation increased in root at 0.6 ppm arsenic concentration and decreasing in root at high arsenic concentration (1.2ppm and 1.8ppm). Fe and Zn accumulation increased with increasing arsenic concentration and at high concentration of arsenic (1.8ppm) accumulation of Fe and Zn decreased.

EFFECT OF SULPHUR APPLIED THROUGH GYPSUM, COWDUNG, POULTRY MANURE AND HOUSEHOLD WASTES ON POST HARVEST SOIL OF T. AMAN RICE

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Farm, Gazipur, Bangladesh during the aman season of July 2008 to January 2009 to investigate the changes of soil physical and chemical properties after T Aman cultivation with combined use of inorganic sulphur and organic sulphur as a source of gypsum, cowdung, poultry manure and household wastes. Eight treatments were T0: control/ no fertilizers; T1: recommended dose of fertilizers; T2: 50% S through gypsum and 50% S through cowdung; T3: 75% S through gypsum and 25% S through cowdung; T4: 50% S through gypsum and 50% S through poultry manure; T5: 75% S through gypsum and 25% S through poultry manure; T6: 50% S through gypsum and 50% S through household wastes; T7: 75% S through gypsum and 25% S through household wastes. The physical and chemical properties of the soils were influenced directly with different treatments. The physical properties of soil- bulk density, particle density and plough pan were decreased with combined use of inorganic and organic sulphur. The rate of improvement of chemical properties such as organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), exchangeable potassium (K), sulphur (S), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) were higher with inorganic and organic amendment than to inorganic alone. Separately, soil pH was decreased to all treatments compared to control or recommended dose of fertilizers. Based on the above results it can be suggested that the combined use of inorganic and organic S significantly improved both the physical and chemical properties of post-harvest T. Aman soil.

GENETIC VARIABILITY CORRELATION AND PATH ANALYSIS IN
RICE (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract

 The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during January to June of 2011. The experiment was intended to estimate the nature and magnitude of genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient of 39 rice genotypes collected from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Lal Teer Seed Ltd. and Chittagong Hill Tracts. All the characters tested showed significant variations among the genotypes. High genotypic coefficient of variation was observed for grain yield and number of unfilled grains per panicle. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed in grain yield, harvest index, 1000-grains weight, unfilled grains per panicle, secondary branches number and plant height indicating additive gene control on the expression of these characters and that selection based on these characters might be effective. The significant positive correlations were recorded for number of effective tillers per plant, 1000-grains weight and harvest index with grain yield at both genotypic and phenotypic levels indicating that the improvement of these characters would lead to increase in grain yield. The highest positive direct effect on grain yield for harvest index followed by number of filled grains indicated that the direct selection based on these characters would be effective for yield improvement.

PERFORMANCE OF HYBRID AND INBRED RICE GENOTYPES AT TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS OF BANGLADESH DURING DRY SEASON

Abstract

Performance of two  new exotic hybrid rice genotypes from India BIO-404 and BIO-452 including two popular BRAC hybrid (Alloran and Sathi) and one inbred (BRRI dhan28) were evaluated at BRAC Agricultural Research and Development Centre of Gazipur and ALSO in the farmer’s field of Rajshahi district during dry season (boro) of 2011. Both the exotic BIO genotypes showed a better cold tolerance at the seedling stage. The initial growth of BIO-404 and BIO-452 were better compared to other tested genotypes. But at the later stage they showed a higher plant height and lower panicle number resulting in lower grain yield than the check hybrids. The spikelet fertility of the two exotic hybrid rice genotypes was also low. Hybrid Alloran produced the highest grain yield in both the locations which  was attributed to higher spikelet fertility and higher individual grain weight.

EFFECT OF VARIOUS INORGANIC FERTILIZER AND MANURE APPLICATIONS WITH DIFFERENT WATER MANAGEMENTS ON YIELD AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF BORO RICE

 Abstract

 An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from December 2010 to April 2011 to assess the effect of various organic manure and inorganic fertilizer with different water management practices on yield and yield attributes of boro rice (BRRI dhan29). The treatment consisted of 2 factors i. e. irrigation and fertilizer plus manure. Two levels of irrigations (I0= Alternate wetting and drying and I1= Continuous flooding) with 8 levels of fertilizer plus manure, (as T0: Control, T1: 100% N100P15K45S20Zn2 (Recommended dose), T2: 50% NPKSZn + 5 ton cowdung ha-1, T3: 70% NPKSZn + 3 ton cowdung ha-1, T4: 50% NPKSZn + 4 ton poultry manure ha-1, T5: 70% NPKSZn + 2.4 ton poultry manure ha-1, T6: 50% NPKSZn + 5 ton compost ha-1 and T7: 70% NPKSZn + 3 ton compost ha-1). Results revealed that irrigation had no significant effect on the yield and yield parameters of boro rice. The treatment T4 showed the highest effective tillers hill-1, plant height, panicle length, 1000- grain wt., grain yield (6.96 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.03 t ha-1) which were lowest in T0 treatment. The highest grain (7.13 t ha-1) was recorded from the I1T4 treatment combination which was also identical to those of I0T4 (6.78 t ha-1), I0T5 (6.88 t ha-1), I1T1 (6.60 t ha-1), I1T5 (6.72 t ha-1).  The lowest (3.84 t ha-1) from I0T0. The highest nutrient concentrations and uptake were recorded also in I1T4 treatment combination. The levels of organic matter and nutrient concentration were increased in the post harvest soils where manure plus inorganic fertilizer were used. It was concluded that application of I0T4 was most favorable for improving yield and yield contributing attributes of BRRI dhan 29.
