EVALUATING PHENOLOGICAL CHARACTERS, FIBER YIELD AND QUALITY OF THE NEWLY RELEASED TOSSA JUTE (VAR. BJRI Tossa Pat-6)

Abstract

Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) has recently released an early maturing high yielding jute variety having better quality fibre of Corchorus olitorius L. in the year 2013 namely “BJRI Tossa Pat 6”. It was previously isolated through anatomical study as a breeding line (O-3820) from the origin of Kenya. The line, was evaluated for time of sowing, days to flowering, yield and other morphological attributes. Advanced yield trials were also conducted for two years (2008 and 2009) along with on-firm yield trials for three consecutive years (2010 to 2012) at Manikganj, Faridpur, Chandina, Kishoreganj and Monirampur stations. After trials, it was observed to be suitable for late sowing and fit for existing cropping pattern in late seeding areas of Bangladesh. The variety had characteristics of flowering within 130-135 days when sown on 30 March. It was observed to be high yielding which is at par with the existing best varieties O-9897 and BJRI Tossa Pat-4 along with higher fibre compactness. It matured earlier than the existing varieties, and could be sown 15 days earlier than existing photosensitive variety O-4. It bearded non-shattering pod characteristics and observed to be tolerant to some insect, diseases and pests such as mite, apion, stem rot and especially nematode. Potential yield of the variety was found to be about 5.0t ha-1 by maintaining the plant population 3.5-4.0 lac. ha-1. However, the average yield was observed about 3.0 tha-1, which was 7.16 % higher than the existing O-9897.

GENOTYPE x ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION OF TOSSA JUTE (CORCHORUS OLITORIUS L.) FOR FIBRE AND SEED YIELD

 Abstract

Genotype-by-sowing date interaction of seven jute genotypes (O-9897, O-72, A-1749, O-4, SDLT2, JRO-524 and A-4582) for fibre and seed yield were assessed at three different sowing dates (1st March, 1st April & 1st May) treated as sowing environments through regression and deviation from regression analysis. The experiments were carried out at the Jute Agriculture Experimental Station (JAES) of BJRI, Manikganj, Bangladesh during March’ 2005-December 2005 in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The genotype  environment interaction was highly significant for number of pods plant-1, which indicated significant differences in the response of genotypes to changes in environments for this character. The Varieties O-9897, JRO-524 and A-4582 showed non-significant S2di suggested that the varieties might be stable for pods plant-1 under environmental fluctuation. The phenotypic index of A-1749 and O-4 were positive and the remaining was negative. Regression coefficient of JRO-524 had higher value than unity which indicated high responsiveness of the genotype and its suitability for favorable environments. Regression coefficient of O-9897 was close to unity for pods plant-1 indicating stable performance of the genotype over different sowing dates for the character. The genotype A-4582 had regression coefficient much lower than unity, reflected suitability of the genotype to poor environment for the concerned character.
