A SURVEY ON POTATO PRODUCTION IN SHIBGANJ UPAZILA OF BOGRA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

 Abstract


The study was conducted to know the present status of potato production at Shibganj upazila under Bogra district during 2009-10. Primary data were collected from potato growers of 12 unions of Shibganj upazila. At Shibganj upazila, area and production of potato were 17,145 ha and 2,64,513 ton respectively. Ten potato varieties were cultivated there of which five were HYVs developed by BARI and the rest were local. HYVs potato covered 77.28% area and the rest 22.72% area was covered by local varieties. Among HYVs, Granola (55%) and Cardinal (25%) covered maximum potato area and among local varieties, maximum area was covered by Lalpakri (56%), Pakri (20%), and Shilpakri (16%). Average potato yield of the upazila was 15.43 t ha -1 during 2009-10. It is observed that improved management practices are necessary for increasing potato production vertically in the study area.
