 Abstract

As intercropping experiment was conducted at HARS, Khagrachari during rabi (dry winter) season of 2007 to find out the suitable combination(s) of popcorn and bushbean/pea as intercrop for obtaining maximum return through increasing productivity. Four intercrop combinations viz. normal row + 2 rows bushbean, popcorn paired row + 4 rows bushbean, popcorn normal row + 2 row Pea, popcorn paired row + 4 rows pea were compared with their sole crops. It was observed that the popcorn normal row + 4 rows pea was found suitable in terms of higher maize equivalent yield (6.59 t ha-1), gross return (TK. 395400 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (5.23). The highest gross return and benefit cost ratio (5.23) values of this combination were attributed to the highest maize equivalent yield of 6.59 t ha-1 indicating that this combination was economically viable and ecologically feasible in the hilly areas of Bangladesh.

Key words: Popcorn, bushbean, Pea, Intercropping and Hill valley.
