 Abstract

Three separate experiments were conducted at the charland of the Padma River under Daulatpur Upazilla of Kushtia district during rabi (October to March) seasons of 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 to select the high yielding and well adaptable varieties of mustard, lentil and hybrid maize for increasing productivity of char areas. In the first experiment four high yielding mustard varieties viz., BARI Sarisha 9, BARI Sarisha 11, BARI Sarisha14 and BARI Sarisha 15 were tested against improved Tori 7. Four high yielding lentil varieties viz. BARI Masur 3, BARI Masur 4, BARI Masur 5 and BARI Masur 6 were compared with local variety
in the second experiment. In the third experiment three BARI developed hybrid maize varieties viz. BARI Hybrid maize 3, BARI Hybrid maize 5 and BARI Hybrid maize 7 were tested against Pacific 11. BARI Sarisha 11, BARI Masur 3 and BARI Masur 6, and BARI Hybrid maize 7 performed better in respect of yield and yield attributes compared to other test crops. The results revealed that BARI Sarisha 11, BARI Masur 3, BARI Masur 6 and BARI Hybrid maize 7 might be grown in char areas for getting higher productivity.
