 Abstract

An experiment was conducted to find out the suitable time and methods of N-fertilizer application in cotton based Jhum cultivation system at Hill Cotton Research Station, Balaghata and Soil Resources and Development Institute (SRDI) Raicha during the kharif seasons of 2003, 2004 and 2005. In cotton based Jhum cultivation- cotton, rice, maize and sesame were used in the present study. There were six treatments viz: T1 = Control (No fertilizer used), T2 = No N-fertilizer used but other fertilizer were used as per Cotton Development Board (CDB) recommendation, T3 = Broadcasting of 45 kg ha-1 urea at 20 days after emergence (DAE) and 60 DAE + 45 kg ha-1 urea ringing at 120 DAE, T4 = Broadcasting of 65 kg ha-1 urea at 20 DAE and 60 DAE + 2% urea solution spraying 2 times after rice harvest at 10 days interval, T5 = Broadcasting of 50 kg urea at 20 DAE and 80 kg ha-1 urea at 60 DAE +2 spray as T4 and T6 = Broadcasting of 50 kg ha-1 urea at 20 DAE and 80 kg ha-1 urea at 60 DAE+2 spray as T4. The result of the three years average showed that the highest mean yield of rice (1340 and 1565 kg ha-1, respectively for Balaghata and Raicha) and cotton (382 and 413 kg ha-1, respectively for Balaghata and Raicha) were obtained from T4 treatment. The highest mean maize yield (372 kg ha-1) was recorded from T5 at Balaghata and that of 374 kg ha-1 from T4 at Raicha. The highest mean sesame yield (100 kg ha-1) was obtained from T5 at Balaghata and that at Raicha was 226 kg ha-1 from T3. The highest gross margin of 6360 and 10840 Tk. ha-1, respectively for Balaghata and Raicha, and the highest benefit cost ratio of 1.27 and 1.47 from Balaghata and Raicha, respectively were observed from T4 treatment. Therefore, broadcasting of 65 kg ha-1 urea at 20 and 60 DAE + 2% urea solution spraying two times after rice harvest at 10 days interval in cotton based hill cultivation system was found suitable for N-fertilization in Jhum crops.

Key words: N-fertilization, Cotton, Jhum cultivation and Hill areas.
